Let's make a Christmas tree
Having gone to the local garden centre to get a tree on Saturday and spending a few pennies on some yummy decorations I had a crazy idea..... "Lets make our own Christmas tree", so we did.
It's fun making things for Christmas and we all forget how and simply buy the finished article, be it the yule log or a door wreath. Together as a family we had fun making the Christmas tree and now we are all in the mood for making the rest of the decorations for the house. Go on have a go yourself it will get you into the christmas spirit. xxx
6. I decided that I wanted the tree to be white so water based emulsion paint was in the shed and worked perfectly. Now for the decorating this evening when Faye comes home from school.
5. Once happy with the shape take in doors.... no that should have been put the last branches on in the house unless you live in a castle and your door is extra wide!!!!!
4. Start layering up the branches to form the shape and hold in place with string or cable ties. ( I know the ties are plastic but the string we had to hand would not hold )
3. Use ready available resources, the garden parasol stand will keep this tree up right. Rub the branches with a wire brush to remove all loose bark and dirt.
2.Remember to take your donkey along to carry it back, foot power no petrol used in the delivery of this tree.
1.First you need to find a fallen tree, it must be a fallen tree after all this is going to be our eco tree.

Shadow Art
After going to a Feist concert last May 2008 and being amazed at the fantastic shadow artists that accompanied the show I have been a bit of a shadow art fan. The recent television commercials for Twinings teas are simply delightful, I hope you like them as much as I do.

Glitz & Hollywood
I have just stumbled across an Auction house Juliens Auction that sold some Hollywood glitz back in the summer, if only I had found them before the auction back in June( I would probably be homeless now!!)
This is Marilyn Monroe's leotard.......(defiantly homeless) and the description in the auction catalogue is...
Leotard of chiffon and net with fitted fishnet overlay, rhinestone and sequin embellishments throughout, hook and eye closure at back, label reads, "20th Century Fox/M.Monroe." This is believed to be the costume designed by William Travilla and intended to be worn for Marilyn to sing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 1953. But deemed inappropriate by the censors.

Loving the vintage suitcase.

Cavania goes to Spain

¡Muy buenas! Cavania is going to Spain, well not me unfortunately but ten and a half thousand Cavania cards are leaving tomorrow. It's always so exciting when she (Cavania) goes off to a new country, we have sent a few small orders out to independent stores there before but not like this.
Adiós! I must check she has packed her sun tan lotion........

White Christmas

Dreaming of a white Christmas, I do hope this rain stops soon. Well I have never been so organised, last Saturday I wrote all my christmas cards. But I think I will wait another week or so to go out and get a christmas tree.
There are so many beautiful images and ideas as to how to decorate your christmas tree, here are just three to choose from today, more tomorrow just to get us all in the spirit.
I can resist the urge no longer I think i will have to put the christmas songs back on the blog soon......

A surprise gift

Look what the postman brought today a gorgeous surprise gift from Wendy my Sister-in-law , all the way from Australia. The note read that Wendy found it in an Antique store, what a lovely find.
It is now sat in my sewing room on the dresser with all my other treasures. The glass is domed and the figures are painted on the inside, with a typical English country garden print behind. A couple of years ago I did a collection of 12 cards all based on silhouettes, each one was titled on the reverse and dedicated to 12 very special women in my life.
Thank you, thank you Wendy, you have made a very wet and grey day a whole lot brighter xxxx
White Rabbit
As you know from a previous post I am a little excited about the new Tim Burton, Alice in Wonderland Movie due out March 2010. After watching the very entertaining Mr Robbie Willaims video for his song 'When you went away' I just had to pop it on my blog.
I would love to have a big table and china tea set permanently at the bottom of my garden with a lovely big chandelier hanging from a tree above. I could visit it and step away from reality when ever the whim took me...............

Painting Day
Some unfinished canvas from the back in the Summer
I am back in my loft painting, well trying to paint. It has been a while since I last picked up a paint brush and I must admit that it has been hard to concentrate. The phone and laptop were a bit of a distraction today I hope tomorrow I will settle down a bit better. The light is gone by about 3pm in the afternoon so there is only a short opportunity each day . I have got to get my head into painting pretty quickly as the collecions are supposed to be launching for Spring 2010.

Christmas Style

Christmas is coming so time to get the ribbons and bows out and go completely mad decorating everything that stands still long enough, or is that just me.....
I am going to do a ribbon theme to the house this year and thinking that I might decorate the christmas tree with just white fairy lights and ribbon bows of different sizes and colours.

Stockist Finder
As you may already know we have a stockist finder service now on our website. This is for customers to find their nearest stockist, but it is being abused by someone trying to search my data base. Firstly this is a free service but every search is costing me 20p and if the abuse continues I will be left with no alternative than to block your IP address from accessing any of our sites.
Please stop.... pretty please.
Thank you

Cavania on YouTube
We were told today that an interview Christian did for the Autumn Fair in September has been posted on YouTube and another version on the Fairs sight.
They only got Christians name wrong on one of the versions! Also in the background of the interview is Ian Bradley our Midlands agent and friend.
I don't know what with Christian being on Top Gear this week and now this will Cavania be able to keep him? Move over Simon Cowell!!!
Photo Shoot for New Look Cavania
I have been busy as always the last couple of days working on product shots for our new website and store. I think I have taken nearly 400 images as well as styling each product, talk about having to concentrate.
The world of Cavania is manic on all levels at the moment, in the office James and Christian are running as the phone and fax machine are ringing hot. Gemma has been an absolute star the past few weeks at getting the online store up.
Cavania now has a new look and a stockist finder as well as an online store.
Here are just a few of the finished photos which are now being uploaded on to the store as well as a sneaky peak at some of the goodies that will be in the Cavania stockists in January 2010.
On line ordering for stockists is coming soon too, I need a cup of tea.
Have a fabulous weekend all, and if you are a fan of Top Gear watch out for Christian & James this Sunday they will be in the opening scenes next to the Ferrari. They ducked out of the office for the afternoon on Wednesday to watch the show being filmed, boys and their toys!

Never Forget

Today I pray for peace to wash over mankind like a fresh morning breeze.
Today I wish for every man, woman & child to see with new eyes.
Today we should remember all those who have laid their lives down for the good of others.
Today, tomorrow and always, we will not forget you nor will we ever truly be able to thank you.
Together we can each start to make this world a better place.

Spirit of Christmas
Thank you to all that came along and said hello it was lovely to meet you. This is a photo of my little stand or should I say tardis! I cant beleive how much we managed to squeeze into it. I was trapped on my stand for 5 days and completely forgot to ask Christian to take my camera and snap away at all the other lovely stands and displays around the venue.
My Union Jack bags and pictures went down a storm and I shall finish the final 50 and pop them on my store this weekend. The store went live on Wednesday and we are still adding bits and bobs but most exciting is the store locater which is being added today. All you have to do is pop your postcode in and your nearest Cavania stockist will be displayed.
Christian and I gave out nearly 1500 leaflets at the show with the store locater details so hopefully our stockist should be getting some visits from new customers very soon.

Sewing Marathon
I have been back from China for three days now and still very jet lagged, getting up at 2am, 5am and finally this morning at 8.30am. Now my mission is to finish the union jack bags I started for the Spirit of Christmas retail show which starts on Wednesday.
I have made only 50 and these will also be available to buy through my on line store which will be launched in the next couple of days.
I have been wanting my own store for some time now and after many an email requesting to purchase an original of one of my cards it will finally be open this week. This will be a very exciting week!
Many photos to post about our 10 day trip to China, but this will have to wait till after Spirit of Christmas at Olympia, London. If you are visiting the show do stop by and say hello, stand B35.

Loving the Orient
I am off to Hong Kong for 10 days for work, it's been a year since I was last there. But it is one of those places that it doesn't matter how many times you go, as it's always exciting. I am also visiting Canton for the first time and going by train from Hong Kong so I am really looking forward to see more of the landscape through the train window.
Chrisian is coming too and although it will be work every day for the full time we are there and some very long days, we get to spend time together which is always fun. No cooking or housework for me for 10 days, yippie.
I will of course be eating chinese nearly every night, and a visit to Yoshinoya noodle bar is a must. Fortunately the hotel we stay in for most of our visit has a gym on the top floor with windows that are over looking the HK harbor. So peddling away my calories and watching cruse ships and little junk's bobbing along will make the torture of exercise more bearable for me.
I love this jacket from Smithsonia Store and I feel many visits to the ladies markets on Tung Choi Street coming on, I might be lucky to find such a treasure.
I will try and post and keep you updated with all our adventures, if any of you just happen to be popping by HK drop me a line we could meet for yummy noodles. xxx

Sweet as..... Grandmother's
I seem to have been very busy lately , more than usual that is. Meetings here and there and so many appointments, time is flying by and I am trying to get all my artwork ready for the January launches. I am off on a road trip to see some suppliers about some exciting new gift lines next week but I will keep you in the loop about that another day.
English Rose my latest card collection has been a bit of a smash since it's launch in September. It has now been licensed and will be featuring on many gift lines such as a recipe book, shopping list, memo pad, note books and ceramics. I am the most excited to see the cookie jar and mugs. Talking of mugs is it time for tea and biscuits?
I wonder what the mugs are going to look like, this was one suggestion, as soon as I see them I will take some photos.
At the top of this post is a photo of my maternal grandparents on their wedding day, Marjorie and Frank Hawtin. Not to sure which year it was maybe 1940/41. The embroidered flowers that feature in all the English Rose cards were actually stitched by my Grandmother. I recently found a sheet that she had embroidered just after she was married to my grandfather, it was tucked in a draw in what was her sewing room. It wouldn't have seen the light since 1992 which is when she left us, so what better then to scan it and make it part of the collection.

and my favorite, Coconut Ice, my Grandmother would make this for me and I so loved it. We spent hours together either baking or sewing, she was defiantly a major source of inspiration in my life. I love you Nan and miss you xxx

I had to add this book to the Beach Hut day as today I received a lovely email from it's authoress Kathryn Ferry, she told me that for research she had visited some 20,000 huts. I was amazed as I never would have guessed that there were as many in existence in the UK. Kathryn has two other books to look out for and signed copies are available direct from the author at www.beach-huts.com

Pink Camper Van
Day 2 - Retro Love
I have always wanted a pink VW Camper Van to jollying around the country side in. If I ever get to have another baby I will purchase one and even if it doesn't work I would love to paint and decorate it as a play den. Don't worry if I get to have a little boy I will paint it blue or maybe pale green or how about dove grey, decisions..... decisions. It would be parked in a lovely spot and be filled with squashy cushions and of course a tea set.

Retro Love
Day1 - Retro Love
A week of retro love, starting with a visit to London.........
Faye and I are completely hooked on retro, be it a camper or a fabric bag. I think we are being stalked by the cutest car, a Nissan Figaro, every where we go there seems to be one. Sunday Christian and I spent the day window shopping and what should appear a pink 'Figaro" ( you have to sing the word Figaro when you see one). It was just off the Kings Road, Chelsea and was so sweet.
Hope & Greenwood a scrumptious candy store full of lollies and sweets in jars.
and of course we just had to stop by a Cath Kidston store, this one was in Covent Garden.
A fabulous airstream which was also in Covent Garden.

Shabby Chic
It's Saturday morning and it's breakfast in bed time, after what has been a very long and busy week. With lots of meetings and some extremely long days in my studio, I have been getting artwork ready for the printers and an extremely exciting licensing partnership with Lesser & Pavey, details of which I will share on a later date.
With the weather being so unusually mild for this time of year, I am torn as wether to go window shopping or do a little craft painting. If I am lucky I might be able to manager both, hope you are having a relaxing weekend too. xxx
A new book is out on the shelves and it looks lovely, I might just have to find myself a copy whilst out and about.
Click for a sneek peek at Rachel Ashwell's Californian home and some hints & tips in her new book Shabby Chic Interiors. I visited Rachel's East Hampton store whilst visiting NY last year and it was full of gorgeous things. The news of half the chain closing earlier this year was a shock and such a shame, good luck Rachel with the new book.

Autumn Leaves
Autumn is here and the leaves are dropping of the trees faster then you can rake them up. I spent time on Sunday afternoon with the leaf blower trying to get my front garden tidy. Raking a large pile of leaves up and then filling my garden bag for composting, no sooner then finishing my cup of tea I turned around and the very large and very beautiful tree had sprinkled little presents all over my lawn again.

Craft Project - Washing Powder Jars
The finished jars.
I have been looking for a couple of containers to hide the washing powders away in as they sit on top of my washing machine which is not behind a cupboard door. These blue enameled metal jars which I found in a homeware's store will be just perfect, once I have painted them cream to match the rest of my home.
First a coat of metal paint in white, Hamerite this I left for a day to dry before then spraying cream.
The washing jars next to a metal bucket I painted which keeps all the shoe polishes together.

Tickle Me
This is so cute, you can't help but giggle along.
The little creature is a Slow Loris which is a slow moving Strepsirhini primate from Borneo and the southern Philippines. They are hunted for their large eyes, which is prized for local traditional medicine, leaving them on the endangered species list.
I am now adding Slow Loris's to my wish list. If I was to ever win the lottery I have always said I will drop out of society and be a bare foot hippy on a quest to save Seadragons and now Slow Loris's.
What would you do if you won the lottery?

Cosy Country Homes
Autumn is drawing nearer and the trees are starting to drop their leaves, I do like this season. Looking forward to walking through giant piles of leaves in London parks and drinking hot chocolate on a Sunday afternoons. Now my attention will be turning from the garden back into the home, and if I get any time I might do a spot of decorating, again...... my sewing room could do with some TLC
and maybe the spare bedroom could have a make over. Time for some tester pots and to patchwork a wall to see which one I like.

Beautiful Children's Rooms
Images of beautiful childrens rooms so calm and chic........ they don't stay that way for long! The trick is great storage, colour co ordinated boxes under the bed, on shelves and in or on the wardrobe. Faye & I would once a year do a good sort out and take unused/wanted toys to the school nursery or the local charity store, either before her birthday or Christmas. Although only for a very short while her room would look a little more organised.

Church for Sale

I am unfortunately putting my little church in Brixham, Devon on the market to sell. St Peter's now has full planning permission to be turned into a stunning 4/5 bedroom, 4 bathroom, family home over 3 levels. As you may already know I have always wanted to live in a church and when we bought this last year I couldn't believe my luck.
However Christian and I have had a long chat recently and tried to work out how we can juggle everything and for me to stay stress free'ish. As one day I would like to find myself pregnant and time is ticking now, not in my favour. Fulfords has the listing (ref 5313) and already we have had expressions of interest, I am so torn but another addition to the family is more important right now. Maybe one day in the future I will be lucky enough again to find another little church to save from total disrepair and that one might have to have a nursery planned into it too, fingers crossed.
Here are some of the images from my 'Church' folder, I have so many ideas and just hope to maybe one day see St Peter's in all it's finished glory as a home. It was just left to rot when we discovered it and it then took 11 months of very hard work to get full planning permission.

New Beginnings

Yesterday saw the launch of the new and very exciting business venture, R&R Confidence. Lorraine (right)is the very better other half of a friend of mine, and she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. Not only did she battle and come through smiling and very determined to live life she and her best friend Gina wanted to start their own business. Having found that the market was not bursting with suitable head scarves to help give women with hair loss gain their confidence back. They saw an opportunity to put their hard work and experience to even more use. Read their story by clicking here and to go to their website site to veiw their fabulous collection, friendship is a precious thing.

Summer Sun

The sun has been out for the last couple of days, and it's the last ho-rah of summer. I am finally getting a day off after many days of very hard work. We finished at the Autumn show on Wednesday in Birmingham and it took five hours to breakdown the stand, Christian, James and I were running! Drove home and then with the van packed Thursday we went straight to London and started to build the stand again for Top Drawer. It took two days to build this one as we all new what we were doing after the three days to complete Birmingham. I am going to do absolutely nothing but sit and enjoy the summer sun for possibly the last time this year. Croissants in bed and this months edition of Vogue which arrived in the week, ah the weekend, hope you all have a lovely relaxing one x
